The Wheel of Life

All over the world, people celebrate holidays to mark the turning of the seasons, the progression of time, the cycles of our lives.  Every culture celebrates the return of the light after the long days of winter, the rebirth of green in the spring, the bounty of summer, the celebration of harvest, and the return of the quiet, reflective times of our lives.  I find all these holidays fascinating, from Diwali, Eid, Christmas, Solstice, Kwanzaa, Passover, Easter, Nowrūz, Purim, Qing Ming, All Souls Day . . . the list goes on and on.

This is one of my favorite themes in my own artwork.  I’ve just finished another in my series of Elements scarves, in which each corner has a motif to represent the cardinal directions, the four elements, the turning of life — whatever your tradition names it.  East is air, and on this painting it is represented by an eagle on a cliffside.  For South / fire / spirit, I’ve used three women under the sun.  West is water:  a graceful koi swims through a haze of color.  North is earth, and what better represents earth than a snail?

All the elements combine to make a Whole — all matter, all seasons, all ages, all cycles of life.  To every thing, there is a season . . . sing along!
