When I first started painting on silk, I made and sold quite a few directions scarves, that is scarves with symbols for earth, air, fire and water. If you wear it like a neck kerchief, it’s like having four scarves — tie it a different way and have four different motifs. They also make beautiful table scarves. My friends involved in feminist spirituality, earth centered spirituality, and wicca like to use them as altar cloths at home or at gatherings. (The one at the right was sold at the Joyful Jewel, in Pittsboro, NC.)
I just made a new one for the first time in quite a while, shown in the three pictures above. It’s a beautiful thick, shiny charmeuse and has koi for water, a crane for air, a leaf for earth and a dancer representing fire. You can see it at my Etsy shop, in addition to my other silk paintings and wearable art.
