Personal Iconography – Animals

I am always moved by how gracefully animal figures are portrayed in prehistoric art.  They possess an elegant simplicity that is quite appealing to modern sensibility, and have influenced quite a few modern artists.  dogs

I love to use these figures in my silk paintings because of their beautiful contours and strong graphic qualities.   These flying hounds are from a Cucuteni vase at Çatalhöyük in Turkey, ca. 3800 B.C.E.  I’ve used them in my Ancient Landscapes V silk hanging on the right.

goddesshangdetAt left is a detail from Ancient Landscapes III (also shown in my blog post of September 9th).  The beautiful animals were inspired by the cows and horses of Lascaux.animals

These two pieces are normally in my Etsy shop, but right now are a part of my exhibition at Raleigh’s Pullen Arts Center, which will hang until December 1st.   I am teaching a six-week course in silk painting at Pullen beginning November 10th.

Ah, your paintings are fabulous! I would love to have the ability to draw freehand, to bring out of nothing a shape that had meaning! Janine, so very glad you are having fun, so very glad you are sharing!

I just discovered your blog Janine. Love the luscious colors in your silk paintings. I do am amazed by the elegant lines of the drawings in Lascaux.
